NEWS: Kherington Payne cast as female lead in ‘Born To Dance’ Oct

New Zealand press has reported today that Kherington’s been cast in a lead role in an upcoming NZ-produced dance film, titled ‘BORN TO DANCE’. The film will be directed by Tammy Davis (director of Ebony Society and Sonny My Older Brother), choreographed by Parris Goebel (from the amazing ReQuest and Royal Family dance crew), and will star Tia Taharoa Maipi, Kherington Payne, and Stan Walker.

Kherington is currently in New Zealand, and is due to begin filming shortly. There’s a local news report of a visit to a local high school by the film’s director and lead cast members (click on the cap below to see the video).

Some details regarding the film, via ScreenCastingNZ

“When I found out that this film was going to be shot in New Zealand I thought there was no better reason for me to take the role,” says Kherington. “To be able to do what I love in a beautiful country with the most incredible culture and scenery is just a dream”

The film’s director Tammy Davis (Ebony Society, Sonny My Older Brother) is thrilled that Kherington could take up this role.

“I am looking forward to going on this journey with Kherington,” says Davis. “She is a solid performer that brings authenticity to the character of Sasha. I think that the audience will love the chemistry between Tu and Sasha and be blown away when they see them dance together”

Kherington will play the lead role of Sasha, a privileged North Shore dancer from the ‘K-Crew’ who gets close to Papakura boy Tu when he auditions to join their crew. The character of Tu will be played by fresh faced Tia Maipi. This role will be Tia’s first major acting role although he has danced around the world as part of Hip Hop International’s gold medal winning crew The Royal Family. Australasian superstar Stan Walker will play Benji, Tu’s best friend.

Born To Dance will be choreographed by dance heavyweight Parris Goebel who joins the cast fresh from her work on Step Up 4 All In. Hip Hop star P Money has come on board as Music Supervisor.

Born To Dance is due to begin filming in Auckland in mid October 2014. The film is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release mid 2015 via Vendetta Films locally and will be sold internationally by LA based sales agent CMG.

The brief description of the film’s plot, via Cinema Management Group (CMG)

Tu, an ambitious young man from an underprivileged Auckland suburb, dreams of being a professional hip-hop dancer. When his father, a Sergeant in the New Zealand Army, issues an ultimatum – find a purpose in life by the end of the summer or enlist – Tu decides that dance is his way out. After being offered a chance to try out for K-Crew, a prestigious international dance group, Tu must juggle the pressures of his grueling job, his demanding father and turn his back on his South Auckland crew. Things become further complicated when he falls for Sasha, the girlfriend of K-Crew’s malicious leader, Kane. Tu is devastated when he learns that the whole audition process has been a scam to steal the best moves from dancers across Auckland and create animosity within the other teams. In a final stance, Tu will unite his old crew and his new friends, to battle their way into nationals and face K-Crew in the finals.

Here’s an awesome video from TDEA (Texas Dance Educators Association) featuring Kherington and some of her students dancing a combo to Beyoncé’s “Partitions”. Not sure if the students got to learn the last half of that combo, or if Kher was just improvising until the music ended…lol. Check it out below!
